[00:00:01] The Revelation of John at a Glance with Questions for Reflection by Bart D. Ehrman Read by John Paul Middlesworth now that I have provided some posts on the Book of Revelation in a nutshell, including discussions of who wrote it, when and why, along with how it is commonly misinterpreted by readers today, I can give a quick summary of Revelation at a Glance along with three questions to spur your own thinking further. [00:00:29] At a Glance the book of Revelation 1. The book of Revelation gives a narrative description of a prophet's vision of what will happen when God brings the world to a cataclysmic end and creates a new heaven and new earth for his people. [00:00:44] 2. [00:00:45] The book is best understood within its own historical context as one of the ancient Jewish and Christian apocalypses. [00:00:52] 3. [00:00:53] Unlike most apocalypses, it is not pseudonymous. It was written by a Christian prophet named John. [00:00:59] This was not, however, John the son of Zebedee. [00:01:03] 4. [00:01:04] Like other apocalypses, the book is filled with bizarre symbolic visions whose interpretation the author often intimates violent repetitions of action and a movement from catastrophe to triumph. [00:01:17] 5. The book is meant to inspire Christians not to give up hope when experiencing suffering, since God will ultimately have the last word and make all right, that is wrong. [00:01:28] 6. [00:01:29] Portions of the book were evidently written in the early 60s under Emperor Nero, who appears to be the Antichrist 666 but it was probably put into final form later under the emperor Domitian around 95 CE. [00:01:44] Questions for reflection 1. Take either side of the following resolution. [00:01:51] The Book of Revelation shows what is about to happen in our own times. [00:01:55] 2. Pick three passages from the Book of Revelation that seem highly symbolic and explain what they mean. Do you think there are any passages that are meant literally? If so, give an example. [00:02:07] 3. Your roommate is very interested in the New Testament and tells you that in his opinion, the Book of Revelation is completely different from any other book ever written. [00:02:18] Do you agree or not? Explain why.
